Le Cabaret is a pleasant restaurant in the Shibuya district of Tokyo serving very tasty food and a great collection of natural wines overseen by talented sommelier Yasuhiro Tsubota. The food has a French influence (rillettes of pork and duck, marinated sardines teamed with cold potatoes, snappingly-fresh oysters opened to order or steak frites for two) and the sommelier will always choose the right wine to match the food you are eating.
On our recent visit we enjoyed the sardines with a glass of the Partida Creus Vinel-lo from Spain. This is an excellent example of a vibrant living wine with no additives including no added sulphites. The grapes were harvested by hand, the fermentation was with indigenous yeasts and no filtering or fining was carried out prior to bottling. It was a very good match.
Later in the evening we dropped back in to Le Cabaret for a quiet drink and enjoyed sipping a bottle of Domaine Labet Metis from Rotalier. This red wine is a field blend of many different red grape varieties that benefit from the limestone prevalent in this southern part of the Jura. At only 11% alcohol it was a pleasant way to finish the evening.

The iconic Tolmer poster

You can tell you have arrived at the right place because just inside the door on the right you will see the iconic symbol of the natural wine movement - the Épaulé Jeté poster created by artist Michel Tolmer for Loire winemakers Catherine and Pierre Breton in 2000. This poster which is modelled on the weightlifters Clean & Jerk action sees the vignerons first lifting the glass onto their shoulder before the final "jerk" to throw the wine down their throat. The text at the top of the poster is "Apprenez le geste qui sauve les Vignerons" which tells us to "Learn the gesture that saves the Winemakers".
