Shonzui is a natural wine bar and restaurant in the Roppongi district of Tokyo that we found out about through Bertrand Celce on his wonderful Web site We figured that if Bertrand liked it so would we. We were so glad that we sought it out. It is one of the best places for natural wine we have found and the owners are incredibly passionate about what they do.
Come out of the Roppongi Station onto Gaien Higashi Dori (it is a fairly big street) and turn left into the second street you come to. Walk down this street and past a 7 Eleven shop and you will see the distinctive white Cabrice Building with its external white staircase. If you look beside the staircase on the ground floor you will see a Shonzui sign quite clearly. Opposite this sign take the stairs to the restaurant. Alternatively just put the latitude and longitude above into your phone and let it guide you here.
Once inside you will immediately know that it is special with the walls and the bar lined with empty bottles of natural wines from the very best of producers. Dard and Ribo is everywhere, Overnoy of many vintages can be seen, the bright Chenin wines of Jerome Saurigny from Anjou, many wines from Thierry Puzelat from Touraine, the brooding reds of Duchene from Collioure and even the stellar Radikon takes pride of place.
But this is not just a bar serving natural wine. This is a full-service restaurant as well. We tried a charcuterie plate and a dish of croustillant de tete de porc, both of which were immensely satisfying and perfectly prepared.
As the evening progressed and the owners recognised from the wines we ordered that we were serious about our wine selections, amazing gems suddenly materialised on our table for a taste including some that are almost impossible to buy in Europe. It was truly an exhilarating night!
