Cotar Vasja was established by Branko Cotar about thirty years ago in the Primorska region of Slovenia while he was still running a restaurant. However the lure of winemaking soon became too strong and he sold the restaurant. Since then he has become one of the star winemakers in Slovenia producing beautiful natural wines of great grace and beauty.
The two wines that we particularly enjoy from this organic estate are firstly the Vitovska (an indigenous grape of the region that is a cross between Prosecco Tondo and Malvasia Bianca Lunga) and secondly the floral Malvasia (Malvazija). Both of these wines have extended skin contact and develop intriguing aromas (the Malvasia smells of orange rind) and great structure which sees them both best drunk when they are not too cold.
These wines are well worth seeking out.
