Azienda Guccione is situated just south of the city of Palermo in western Sicily in the DOC of Monreale. Here Francesco and Manfredi Guccione tend their 7.5 hectares of grapes biodynamically and craft beautiful wines from indigenous grape varieties including the famous Nerello Mascalese which goes into their Gibril wine.
The vineyards are quite high being at some 480 metres to 600metres above sea level with poor, dry terre brune soil. This ensures that the vines plunge deep into the the earth in search of precious water hence imparting a wonderful minerality to the wines.
The vines that supply the Nerello Mascalase grapes for the Gibril are grown in clay soils at an elevation of 450 metres above sea level. The gapres are harvested by hand early in October. The grapes are fermented in large old-oak casks using only indigenous yeasts. The wine sis then aged for 6 months in the barrels and then transferred to stainless steel vats for 6 months before bottling. Only 4000 bottles are produced.
