Black Ridge Farm is a meat producer situated in the fertile hinterland of the North-West Coast of Tasmania at Milabena which is quite close to the Detention Falls Conservation Area in the hills behind Boat Harbour. Don and Keryn Thomson raise pigs, lambs, goats and cows and you can order meat directly from them on their Web site.
We admire the fact that they are committed to sustainable agriculture and eschew the use of genetically modified products.
Their livestock is grass fed not grain fed and that is another big tick from us. Their sheep are a mix of Border Leicester-Merino crosses and Black Suffolk rams with the eventual aim of creating a flock of Black Suffolks. These sheep have been farmed in Tasmania for a long time and the meat is particularly succulent.
We recently enjoyed a beautiful summer salad of green leaves, herbs, tomatoes and juicy, shredded Black Ridge Farm lamb. It was delicious.
The pigs are the famous Wessex Saddlebacks which produce some of the best pork you can get. They also have a small herd of Boer goats which they are building up to help satisfy the growing demand from restaurants and private individuals for goat meat.
They also have a Jersey cow for milk and are about to embark on a bee keeping project as well.

We have also had news that they have taken on the lease of the Lapoinya Abattoir and are in the process of having it certified as an organic abattoir. This will enable Black Ridge Farm to provide new services to their restaurant customers by providing specific cuts of meat on request. We look forward to watching this new enterprise flourish.
