Out the Door in Bush St (there are two others) is a favourite breakfast/brunch place for us now. This place seems to have recaptured some of the vibe of the old Slanted Door in Valencia St and is serving some excellent food and, of course, their trademark excellent wine selection.
All of the dishes are good here but we usually revert to Asian comfort food for breakfast. We like nothing better than to pop in to Out the Door and order the chicken porridge and the sticky rice. The chicken porridge is a classic congee served with shreds of rau ram (that lovely green herb that tastes of coriander), a sprinkling of deep fried shallots and a couple of chunks of what they call Chinese donut which is a fried dough stick which is very common in southern China and Hong Kong where they have a number of names but a common one is 'you tiao'.
The sticky rice is served in a flat, brown bowl moistened with coconut milk, sprinkled with fried shallots and salty peanuts and studded with the most amazing black beans from Rancho Gordo in Napa.
Both of these dishes embodied the flavours and textures we crave at breakfast.
The place is open all day so you can drop in for breakfast, brunch, lunch or dinner. There are some great drinks here with natural wine stars such as Donkey and Goat (the El Dorado Melange Vermentino was available by the glass on our last visit), the Scholium Project and Broc Cellars to name but a few.
