The Meatball Shop in the Lower East Side is a great place for a quick snack or a full meal. Whether you go there for a tiny 'slider', a bun with smashed meatballs or a dish of four meatballs with sauce and a number of sides this place is certainly perfect to reinvigorate your interest in meatballs.
The Spicy Pork meatballs are incredibly light with a very mild spicy flavour. We expected the beef meatballs to be slightly heavier, but they showed a very light hand in the kitchen. One of the tricks to making great meatballs is to ensure that the meat delivers flavour without being too diluted by the lightening agent. Common ingredients for making meatballs lighter include breadcrumbs, egg whites, rice, burghul and, of course, in the case of the benchmark meatball of Marco Canora from Hearth Restaurant, loads of fresh ricotta.
There is a limited but reasonable selection of drinks including Abita rootbeer on tap and four of five red and white wines by the glass.
They also do quite a nice ice cream sandwich where you choose a style of 'cookie' to form the sandwich and then a style of ice cream. We had an oatmeal and raisin cookie with caramel ice cream. It was delicious.
The Meatball Shop is the sort of place that you could easily walk past without realising that there was serious food inside, so look out for it next time you are in the Lower East Side.
