The Colonial Cook Book by The Aristologist who was the local politician Edward Abbot is a fascinating guide to the food scene in colonial Tasmania in the middle of the 19th Century. He was growing 26 different varieties of basil in this British colony at the time! He was also deeply into eating the local fauna including possums and wallaby.
