l'Houmet is a hidden treasure lying just off the road from Monteux to Velleron in France's Vaucluse quite close to the city of Carpentras. It is a ferme auberge and working farm that supports quite a large restaurant that is strongly supported by the locals.
We had such a interesting meal here that we need to go back to confirm the experience.
It’s only open for lunch and not on Wednesday. Our attempts to book by email failed - if you want to try it we suggest you call in, probably late in the afternoon (except Wednesday) and book in person or, if your French is okay you can call them. The day we went it was packed, mainly with locals, and we had to negotiate / drive through a game of boules in the car park when we finally left late in the afternoon.
It’s a true farm, with all the farm aromas you’d expect and an opportunity to get up close and personal with relatives of what you’re about to eat.
Everything is pre-determined; an aperitif with olives to start, a salad, a plate of charcuterie and other goodies, then, in our case, lamb, which was cooked outside on a spit over an open fire, with chick peas and silver beet stems, a cheese course and, finally dessert, one of which was a beautiful chocolate and chestnut dish. All this comes with copious quantities of rose and red wine. The only ordinary parts of the whole experience were the crème anglaise served with the desserts and the coffee.
The wines are from Domaine de Champ-Long in the pretty village of Entrechaux which lies on the lower slopes of Mont Ventoux south east of Vaison-la-Romaine.
