When we arrive in Bangkok we either catch the ferry up the river to the wonderful Ton Po, or we jump on the Sky Train and head for Thong Lo station and take exit 2.
That means we are heading for the ramshackle Vientiane Kitchen where the flavours of the food are complex, deep and exciting, the service is calm and friendly and the dining experience fulfilling.
We love the fermented dishes such as the fish naam prik and vegetables with the nam jim dipping sauce. Then again, there is nothing we have tried here that we haven't liked!
The food here is not dumbed down as it is in many hotel restaurants so it is well worth the walk along the rickety road from the station.
On a visit in April 2004 we again loved everything about our meal including the beautiful grilled fermented Isan sausages, the Som Dtam Lao with a deep and mellow flavour from fermented fish and a soupy Kaeng Om Moo served with sticky rice.
A visit in 2008 was less satisfactory with the old sparkle in the food lacking somewhat.
