Hotel La Mirande is a classy accommodation venue close by the imposing Palais de Papes. The dining room is one of Avignon's best options with some wonderful food being turned out of the basement kitchens.
These kitchens are a culinary nursery in this part of France, having produced renowned local chefs such as Christian Etienne and Daniel Hebet, who now have their own restaurants. It continues to contribute to the city's culinary culture, particularly with the regular table d'hote dinners, served in the bowels of the hotel, in its beautiful 19th century kitchen. Alternatively, the three course lunch menu du marche is good-value, especially because there are exceptional local wines available by the glass and knowledgeable wine service. Chances are there will be two or three Châteauneuf-du-Papes open; both white and red.
