Black Cow Bistro is a pleasant restaurant in Launceston serving very good beef from a range of excellent suppliers including Cape Grim Natural Beef, Clover Country Meats and Greenham Tasmanian Natural Beef.
The theme for the decor is inspired by the paintings of the caves of Lascaux in France. The menu is heavily weighted towards meat in both the entrée and main course sections making the briny oysters from Moulting Bay Lagoon a good choice for first course here. The beef is of exceptional quality and cuts such as rump, porterhouse, scotch fillet, rib eye and eye fillet can be ordered in sizes ranging from 200g to beyond 400g for the serious meat eater!
At a recent meal we tried a rib eye cooked very rare and served with a beetroot relish. This was a fine cut of meat and a good relish, but even better was a perfect piece of Cape Grim rump cooked blue and served with Black Cow butter made from butter, wine and shallots. This butter complemented the steak beautifully.
They have some excellent Tasmanian wines on their list including a Chardonnay and Riesling from Three Wishes Vineyard, a Riesling from Pressing Matters and the amazing d'Meure Pinot Noir. On our last visit we chose the d'Meure and the match with the steak with Black Cow butter was absolutely perfect.
After our main course we chose a glass of the Pressing Matters R69 to transition our palates for the forthcoming dessert. This pure riesling is the perfect choice for letting your palate know that you are finished with savoury dishes and are now ready to move into sweeter things.
