La Cabanne d'Oleron is an oyster bar with just a few small tables in the corner of the Les Halles market in the centre of old Avignon. Here you sample freshly opened oysters from the Ile d'Oleron accompanied by a glass of crisp Muscadet wine.
The Ile d'Oleron is a small island in the Bay of Biscay off the west coast of France almost half way between the cities of Nantes and Bordeaux. It can be reached by road from the town of Marennes. The oysters farmed here are often called Marennes-Oleron oysters and are raised in estuaries in large plots called 'claires'.
At La Cabanne d'Oleron these oysters are held live and then opened as you order. You sit at one of the small tables, sip your crisp Muscadet from Cave des Guiloires and watch the owner deftly open the oysters for you. They are delicious and a good way to relax after touring the stalls in Les Halles.
