Tasmania is well known for the quality of its stone fruit due to the cool climate and cooling breezes that blow in off the cold oceans that surround the island. Cherries are exported widely particularly to Japan and, more recently, to the United States. But other stone fruit such as apricots, peaches, nectarines and greengages also thrive here in the cool climate.
Tasmania is particularly famous for its cherries, which conveniently usually appear just in time for Christmas and are at their peak at the annual Taste of Tasmania. The centre of the industry has been the Huon Valley but large orchards are also to be found in the Derwent Valley (particularly the very large Redlands Orchard just outside New Norfolk on the southern side of the Derwent River operated by Tim Reid of Reid Fruits), the Coal Valley and near Spreyton in the north west of the State. During the cherry season you can either pick your own or buy in quantity at orchards such as the Sorell Fruit Farm. There is also the large Lennonville Orchards producing very high quality Black Devil fruit on Bruny Island.
Look out for apricots towards late January. They are best bought direct from the orchard so that you can be sure they are real apricots (read 'apricots with flavour!'). You'll see roadside stands and ads in the 'Wanted to Sell' columns of newspapers. These are a good source for large quantities if you want to make jam.
Qew Orchards near Richmond is one of Australia's largest fresh apricot orchards, producing fruit for the domestic and export markets.
Tasmania is also a haven for wonderful greengages, one of the most underrated fruits on the planet. These acidic beauties are particularly suited to Tasmanian conditions. They are a great fruit to eat straight from the tree, make a wonderful stew and also a great long-lasting jam.
