Our obsession with Silo Bakery needs to be explained.
Canberra revolves around small suburban collections of 'shops'. They talk about the Kingston shops and the Manuka shops and the Dickson shops. The trendiest area is Manuka, but Kingston is closing the gap fast.
One contributing factor was the opening of the Silo Bakery. From the day Silo opened it was immensely popular. Locals and visitors staying in the hotels across the road flock here for the best breakfast in Canberra.
We always start with a glass of freshly squeezed orange juice and a strong cup of espresso coffee. We might also have some fresh fruit and yoghurt or some of the wonderful sourdough toast with jam.
If we are having a more leisurely breakfast we might be tempted to indulge in the strongly-flavoured Welsh Rarebit if it is available. On one occasion we tried a breakfast of kippers with roasted tomatoes. The kippers were perfect and the tomatoes a great accompaniment.
At lunchtime the place is always packed. You might be tempted by a steak, kidney and oyster pie or by the wonderful Andalusian tripe that has been stewed for twelve hours.
In between meals you can drop in here for a coffee or real tea and accompany it with one of the fabulous pastries that line the counter in a most tempting way.
