Glancing in the door of this slightly seedy store called Vieux Carre' Wine & Spirits you couldn't even imagine the treasures that await you inside. Walk past the people lounging around the one or two tables in front and start admiring rack upon rack, row upon row of some of the best champagnes, wines and spirits in the city.If you are celebrating, how about a vintage Krug? Or for the champagne aficionado, the rarely seen Salon 1988. Move on to the spirits section and you will find an impressive array of Scotch including the wonderfully iodine-laden, peaty, smoky Laphroaig from the island of Islay. Feel like a top tequila? Would you like the Patron or the Heradura Anejo? On to the vodka. Go past the Russian and Polish varieties and head for the best. Where is it made? In France no less. Here you can buy the revered Grey Goose vodka. Then to the wine. Puligny-Montrachet Grand Crus rest peacefully alongside Chateauneuf du Pape, Valpolicella and Australian Shiraz. Great names from California such as Ridge, Kistler and Mondavi dot the shelves. And if you are really lucky you will be able to wander down past the amazing array of monastery brews from Belgium to feast your eyes on the collection of special and vintage wines in one of the two locked rooms at the back.We think that Martins in the Garden District is slightly better but it is still well worth a visit. One warning however. We have had a number of bottles of wine from here that have tasted 'jammy' - a sure sign of repeated heating and cooling of the wine due to lack of proper temperature control. So our advice is to buy wines that you know are popular and hence the stock turns over quickly.
