Tartine Bakery was established by Chad Robertson and Elisabeth Prueitt in 2002 in the then unfashionable Mission District of San Francisco.
We started to hear reports of this place in the mid-2000s and were determined to visit on our next trip that took in that city.
We were not disappointed. The bread here is amazing with a firm, deep crust and a chewy centre that can only come by pushing the hydration of the dough to the limits.
Apart from the bread, Tartine Bakery is one of our favourite places to go for breakfast in San Francisco. We go here to savour the laid back neighbourhood atmosphere, the huge pain au chocolat and the moorish croque monsieur. The coffee is very good too.
If we stay at Hotel Vitale near the Ferry Terminal we catch either the BART to the 16th St Station or Muni Bus number 14 or 14L to 18th and then walk the two blocks to Tartine.
