Grey Sands Vineyard is situated in Tasmania's beautiful Tamar Valley and produces some excellent wines using Pinot Gris and Merlot grapes.
Owners Rita and Bob Richte have gained the attention of the national wine press through an unlikely grape variety for Tasmania - the noble Merlot.
What we like about their vineyard is that they eschew irrigation. Oh we wish that more Australian producers would do this so that the grapes do not become flavourless waterbags!
And while we are at it we need to say a few words about Merlot. It is fashionable to decry wines made from this grape, perhaps because of a good line in a Hollywood film But Merlot is capable of being the base of very, very good wines as proved by some of the great examples in Bordeaux.
We also admire their full-bodied Pinot Gris, find their new Romanesque interesting (it is a blend of Shiraz, Petit Verdot and Touriga) and love the Chardonnay blended with Viognier.
