We nearly didn't get to Balthazar on our recent trip to New York. We miscalculated the time it takes to get from one end of Manhattan to the other, especially in the midday traffic. So we didn't arrive until after 2pm. It didn't matter. People were still arriving in droves. We didn't have a booking (unusual for us in this city, as it is just so hard to get a table) but we were shown promptly to one of the last tables available.
The service staff were pleasant and friendly and seemed eager to please despite the large numbers of diners they were attending to.
While we were admiring the large columns with embedded lights and mirrors that dominate the large room, and the huge mirrors on the back and side walls, we sipped a very pleasant Bernard Amiot Chambolle and tried to remind ourselves that we were not in France!
The Brandade de Morue served as our starter came in a huge bowl with three large pieces of toast accompanying. The cod had been flaked lightly and provided texture and heaps of flavour.
A grilled quail salad offered far more than suggested. It was accompanied by stunning roasted vegetables including zucchini, eggplant, squash and potato as well as grilled radicchio. A great dish. Our other dish was a beef stroganoff served with very well-made papardelle as well as onions and mushrooms. Very satisfying!
We left feeling that this was as good as any of the bistros that we had eaten at in Paris.
