Adelaide Central Market is arguably Australia's oldest produce market. Its operated on this central Adelaide site since 1869 and is no doubt one of the reasons why the restaurant food in this city is infinitely more interesting than the other regional Australian capital cities (Brisbane and Perth).
The range of fruit and vegetables reflect South Australia's rich ethnic history. A long-standing German presence, going back to the nineteenth century, Italian immigration after World War 2 and, more recently, immigrants from Indochina have all left their marks. It makes for great diversity.
As well as fresh produce, there are many specialty stallholders including Providore which offers one of the city's best ranges of olive oil and other delicatessen lines. Look out for an increasing range of locally-made oils from the Barossa, McLaren Vale, and Kangaroo Island. There are several stalls selling very good smallgoods (these are a must visit because South Australia is Australia's smallgoods capital), bakery stalls, and any number of others (well, about 250 actually).
There are several nearby cafés, some actually in the market complex, all of which do a roaring trade, especially at breakfast times.
