A panini is an Italian 'sandwich' that is often grilled in a panini press in the United States. In Italy, panini are not necessarily heated. The fillings can range from a simple slice of cheese or salami to more elaborate and exotic combinations of flavours.
Although the word panino is the singular of panini, this form of the word is not often used in English-speaking countries. A panino is a 'little bread' or small roll that is the right size for a snack.
