Vins de Pays du Gard is an emerging vin de pays in the Gard département of Languedoc Roussillon which is quite close to, and shares some characteristics with, the Rhone.
Domaine de la Mordoree from Tavel produces an interesting red wine under this appellation called Re:Naissance which is an unusual mix of 50% Merlot and 50% Marselan. This is a relatively new grape variety made from crossing Cabernet Sauvignon and Grenache giving a grape with small berries (like Cabernet Sauvignon) but with concentrated colour and fruit flavour.
Another good wine from the appellation is the Domaine Delacroix Vin de Pays du Gard. This is an organically-produced wine that is a combination of Cabernet Sauvignon and Mourvedre.
