Vins de Pays des Cotes de Thongue is an interesting vin de pays in the Herault area of the Languedoc Roussillon. It covers an area from the village of St Thibery sweeping north to Magalas.
In her excellent book The Wines of the South of France, Rosemary George writes of the 45 producers in the Vin de Pays des Cotes de Thongue:
"This group of independent, searching and like-minded wine growers is successfully creating an identity for the Cotes de Thongue. They are virtually unique for a vin de pays in the Midi; you may find two or three producers elsewhere with their clout and energy, but certainly not as many as here. Such is the success of the region that other nearby estates would like to be included, even though they are theoretically outside the Cotes de Thongue."
The grape varieties that succeed here include Grenache Blanc, Chardonnay, Viognier, Merlot, Mourvedre, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. There are also some plantings of Pinot Noir, Petit Manseng, Ugni Blanc and Rolle.
Producers we like here include Domaine la Reynardiere and the organic Domaine de Bassac. Another interesting wine is the Domaine du Tabatau Vin de Pays des Côtes de Thongue.
