The Crljenak grape variety (specifically the Crljenak Kastelanski variety) is found on the Dalmatian Coast of Croatia and has been found by US researchers to be genetically identical to the Zinfandel grape, thus putting to rest the argument about whether it is a US or Italian native grape, an argument that has been long running in those two countries.
A researcher at the University of California at Davis, Carole Meredith, along with two scientists at the University of Zagreb used DNA testing techniques to establish the link between the two grape varietes and that called Primitivo in the Puglia region of Italy.
