The Dr Loosen Riesling Kabinett Bernkasteler Lay from Mosel-Saar-Ruwer exhibits a strong backbone of acidity and a slate/mineral flavour on the palate. It is a beautifully-made wine that is marked by its long, lovely, lingering finish. It is a perfect wine for understanding just how good German Rieslings can be.
No other wine producer so clearly typifies excellence in the production of German wines. Dr Loosen took over his family vineyards in the late nineteen eighties at a time when Germany was infamous as the producer of cheap, sweet, mass produced, low quality wines.
One of his first decisions was to eschew the use of chemical fertilisers and sprays and then he began reducing the yield of his vines. He favoured those vines that grew on slate slopes and this provided the wine with the amazing structure and mineral aromas that shine through.
