The Cote Chalonnaise is a wine producing area in the southern part of Burgundy, occupying low hills south of the fabulous Cote d'Or and north of the Maconnais area. The main grapes used in wine production here are chardonnay and pinot noir but there are some producers of aligote as well.
Wines produced in this area that meet the rules of the appellation are entitled to use the generic appellation Cote Chalonnaise. There are, however, five specific AOC appellations within this area. They are Bouzeron where some fine Aligote is produced, Rully which produces chardonnay and pinot noir, Mercurey which produces bold reds, Givry which produces some elegant pinots and a small quantity of chardonnay and Montagny which only produces discrete white wines that even eschew nominating their status on the label.
