Chateau Meyney St-Estephe is one of our perennial favourites. At a time when the top producers in the area are charging astronomical prices, this workhorse of a wine has remained consistently good and consistently reasonable in price. It's all here from the fine, elegant tannins to the blackberry nuances of the Cabernet Sauvignon to the wonderful cigar box aromas. The Cabernet Sauvignon is supported by some Merlot, Petit Verdot and a little Cabernet Franc.
But a word of warning if you have been reared on Californian or Australian cabernet! These restrained Bordeaux wines do not explode in your mouth. They need to be approached with care and thoughtfulness to appreciate what lies below.
This is not a wine for cellaring but for enjoying now.
