The Tierra de Fernandez Gomez produced by the family run Agricola Labastida from the village of Labastida is an interesting wine because it is a white, not the normal red that you expect from this appellation. The wine is a mixture of Viura, White Grenache and Malvasia and is fresh and lively with a racy acidity that belies its rather high alcohol content at 14%. It is produced in the Alava sub-zone of the Rioja DOC.
We first tried it at Mugaritz in San Sebastian and were immediately impressed with its freshness and complexity.
