Villars sur Var is a small medieval village overlooking the River Var valley.
Clos St Joseph Villars sur Var is a white wine from this village. It is of some interest as it is the only vineyard with Cotes de Provence AOC status in the Alpes Maritime département.
Both red (based on Mourvedre and Grenache with a little Syrah) and white (from Ugni Blanc, Clairette, Rolle and Semillon) are allowed.
We are particularly fond of the white which teams beautifully with the food of the region.
We first tried it at the wonderful Louis XV restaurant in Monaco. We were particularly impressed with the fact that they were more interested in promoting a local and relatively good value wine than pushing a more expensive, better known wine to their customers.
This wine is now available in the United States through Blue Coast Wine Imports in New York (www.bluecoastwines.com).
