AOC used to be a wine bar, wine shop and café tucked away in a side street in Avignon's cobbled pedestrian zone, It has now moved to larger premises nearby in the place Jerusalem. It is a pleasant lunchtime venue for sampling some simple foods and some very good value wines. Listed on the blackboard inside will be ten whites and reds that you can try by the glass. On the shelves you can peruse the bottles that are also available.
Dishes are simple such as a charcuterie platter accompanied by a bowl of bread and some cornichons to go with the rillettes, cured meats and jambon, a salad of pigs feet and a simple sardine tart all for very low prices. Options such as hand-cut beef tartare, côte de boeuf or cod fillet with sauce vierge are more substantial.
You'll find excellent local wines as well as other sought after wines such as the lip-smacking Bourgueil by stellar producers Catherine and Pierre Breton.
Most locals prefer to sit outside but there is also a bar inside along with a few extra tables.
