We really enjoyed our recent meal at L'Antico Noè in Florence. Many might eschew it as it occupies an unlovely space inhabited during the day by the less fortunate inhabitants of this historic town. They are generally good-natured and the police keep a close eye on them.
The first thing you notice when you walk into the restaurant is the boxes of fresh mushrooms and artichokes (in season) just inside the door. These are specialties of the house.
When we ordered carpaccio of artichokes the chef walked over to one of the boxes and selected an artichoke he thought would be suitable for this treatment. When we ordered tagliolini of raw mushrooms the performance was repeated.
The restaurant is also well known for its slow cooked dishes. On the night we dined here two braised dishes, one of trippa alla fiorentina and one a wild boar stew were exemplary.
A bottle of Fattoria Di Gracciano Svetoni 2001 Vino Nobile Di Montepulciano TorCalvano was a perfect accompaniment to these robust dishes.
