We have to admit to a serious bias. We believe that entertainment and good food rarely go together. Many establishments that put on entertainment for diners do so to distract them from the quality of the food.We were therefore reluctant to go to Seri Melayu in the heart of Kuala Lumpur, but our friend and work colleague dragged us there. At one end of the cavernous space there is a stage where various cultural acts are played out to the delight of the tourists. While we found it somewhat interesting, it was not why we were there! We wanted to sample the vast array of Malay foods that were set out in buffet style against the far wall. It took us ages to select from the vast range but we found the food to be very good. On our second visit to the buffet however we spied something that we hadn't come across before. A small sign beside a small dish indicated that the dish was tempoyak or fermented durian. If you haven't tried durian you should - it is a national obsession. It is the most awful smelling fruit on the planet but its sweet creamy texture and deep flavour make it one of the world's great fruits. So what would this fermented fruit taste like? We hurried back to our table with some our newly discovered challenge. The three of us tried a spoonful. Our friend went into paroxysms. She hated it. We took one taste and almost swooned. It was one of the most ethereal tastes we have ever experienced. In fact we can still remember the taste just as clearly as other memorable food experiences. If you go to Kuala Lumpur you must try it!
