Our computer work often leads us to uncovering some real gems in the food area. (Well we have to stop for lunch don't we?) A recent contract based at the top end of George St near Sydney's Central Station lead us to the Chinese Noodle Restaurant in the basement of an unremarkable building near the back of the ABC headquarters.
If you arrive at lunch time you will almost certainly have to join the queue. The staff will give you a menu so that you can make your choice while you wait for a table to become available.
Be warned that the servings here are huge! We normally order the braised dumpling soup with hand made noodles or the Xian Jian lamb soup with the same noodles. Both are served in a large, deep white bowl. The lamb soup is topped with pieces of lamb, cabbage, fresh herbs and pieces of capsicum. It is a lovely blend of fresh vegetable and meat flavours accompanied by the moderating effect of the comforting noodles.
If you get a chance, take a peek through the window into the kitchen. It is here that you will see a large coil of silky dough ready to be made into noodles. Every so often you will hear a thud and more noodles are created by magic from the coil.
We can thoroughly recommend this small yet comforting restaurant serving authentic, top-class food at a very reasonable price. As an additional bonus, this restaurant is smoke free!
