Green Papaya in Brisbane was a pleasant surprise. Far from the main restaurant strips, this establishment is serving some very good food to an appreciative clientele.
The flavours are real and the ingredients very fresh. We started our meal with Cuon Tom Thit which are prawn and pork rolls wrapped in fresh rice paper and served with a delicious yellow bean sauce. They were full of flavour and the rice paper was not chewy as it sometimes is in other restaurants.
A similar textured dish was a tofu vegetarian salad wrapped in fresh rice paper and served with a dipping sauce. Although the two dishes used rice paper they were different enough to be interesting.
We normally don't eat prawns because they have usually been either frozen or overcooked. However, we relented when we saw a dish of whole prawns poached in coconut juice with chilli, lemon grass and garlic. Called tom om nuoc dua, this was lovely. Beautiful, gentle flavours and aromas and reasonable prawns. We also tried a chicken salad which was based on corn fed chicken and a house salad that accompanied and complemented the others dishes.
The black sticky rice pudding was a great way to finish a very pleasant meal.
