We first visited this cavernous inner-city restaurant in 1999 and were quite pleased with what we saw. Another visit in 2001 confirmed that it is a popular institution but we came away with the feeling that the are now coasting rather than putting in 110% to make sure that every diner experiences a great meal.
In fact, the staff in the kitchen looked as if they were bored. They did not generate that air of excitement that radiates from the open kitchen at Café Zuni in San Francisco, for example.
Nevertheless, the food was competently cooked - it just wasn't 'worth the journey'.
A dish of Penn Cove mussels served with red peppers and olives was OK and pan seared Alaskan halibut was cooked competently as was a free range chicken with fresh huckleberries and a dish of whole Idaho trout.
We left feeling somewhat deflated as the Palace Kitchen is always very highly touted. On this night it certainly was good but nowhere near great and certainly not deserving of Gourmet magazine including it in the top fifty restaurants in America!
