Crèmerie Fromagerie Mercy (formerly Maison Vigier) is the delightful cheese shop that we always head to whenever we arrive in the Vaucluse. It is situated in the heart of the old part of Carpentras in the recently renovated central square area.
The Vigier family has sold the business to the Mercy family, but there has been no dimunition of the quality of the products sold here - in fact the range of quality products has increased and the wine selection has become more interesting with more organic and natural wines becomong available.
The staff are wonderful and always wanting to help. The treatment of the cheese is exemplary (we love the Bleu de Brebis, the Tomme de Savoie, the l'Epoissses from Burgundy, the St Nectaire from the Auvergne and the various goat cheese crottins) and the selection of local wines intelligent. They range from upmarket Chateauneuf-du-Pape selections (try the Chateau Rayas) to local Ventoux stars such as Chateau Unang and more distant wines such as those of biodynamic guru Nicolas Joly from the Loire.
But it is not only excellent cheese and interesting wine that is on sale here. We also buy succulent Bigorre ham, perfect foie gras and the redoubtable Bordier milk products including their special butter. They are also our go-to source of high quality bottarga.
Note: In September 2017 there was a change of ownership at this venerable establishment. We last vivited a few times in August 2017, so we will check again on our next visit in January 2018 and report back.
