There seems to be a strong correlation between restaurants that we enjoy and the presence of Domaine Tempier's wines on their lists. We first became aware of these earthy gems in 1985 when we made our first visit to Chez Panisse in Berkeley. Years later we were lucky enough to finally visit the vineyard itself and sample the wines in situ.
Later we tried them at the venerable Campagne in Seattle. Then we found that they were imported into Australia by the Ultimo Wine Centre.
And no-one makes it better than the wonderful winemakers at Domaine Tempier in Bandol. We have always loved comparing their great reds from the different parcels of land including the La Turque, the La Tourtine, the La Migoua and the flagship La Cabassaou. These wines really show what can be achieved using Mourvedre as a base grape.
Serious lovers of great wine will also seek out their rose. There are very few wine makers who are committed to making great examples of this wine. But more should, because with the right food and the right climate this is a perfect drink for enjoying summer lifestyle and is particularly suited to Provence and the Cote d'Azur. Domaine Tempier certainly do justice to the rose genre.
