We greeted the news that the Grossi family had taken over the Florentino with some apprehension. We have enjoyed a number of pleasant meals at their South Yarra restaurant and we thought that the work involved at reinvigorating this large and popular restaurant might cause standards to slip. Well, we needn't have been concerned.
We visited twice within two months and were pleasantly surprised. On our second visit we tried a very good carpaccio of beef accompanied by lemon and good parmesan cheese. Another appetiser of tripe stew cooked traditionally with tomato and white wine was stunning. Good, strong rich flavours and the delightful chewy texture of the tripe made this a perfect dish.
The risotto with cuttlefish and cuttlefish ink was a fabulous dish that reminded us of a long past era at Neil Perry's Star Grill in Sydney which is based on squid and squid ink. At Grossi Florentino it was nearly as good!
A very down-to-earth dish of ox tail served with a potato mash was also a delight. The ox tail had been cooked for a long time and literally fell off the bone. The potato mash was light and creamy and was perfect for soaking up the juices from the long-cooked dish.
The wine list is very good here. Our table enjoyed an excellent Pol Roger, the fabulous Grosset Riesling and the unctuous and delectable Leeuwin Estate Chardonnay. If you ever see any of these wines on a wine list go for them!
