Matt's in the Market must be one of the smallest restaurants in Seattle. It is also difficult to locate. You have to go up a set of stairs and head towards Chez Shea to find it.
The kitchen is simply a bench behind the small bar, but somehow they manage to turn out some surprisingly sophisticated and well-conceived dishes.
You might find Manilla clam Piri Piri steamed with beer, herbs and chillies or marinated white anchovy salad served with preserved lemon vinaigrette, fennel, orange, black olives and a few greens. Main dishes might include seared albacore tuna with Tuscan white beans and an arugula pesto or beef shortribs braised in an ancho chile sauce.
And the wine list is quite decent as well. Imagine a list with options of a smart Tokaji, a Banyuls by the glass and a Chateau La Rouviere Bandol Mas de la Rouviere that showed hints of cedar and spice and went perfectly with the shortribs. They are also committed to organic produce and this shows up in the wine selection with natural wine producers such as Gravner, Occhipinti and Radikon from Italy, Labet and Chateau La Canorgue from France and Immich-Batterieberg from Germany.
