The Camargue is an alluring area. The flat plains provide a relieving contrast to the hills, twists, turns and narrow roads of the rest of Provence.
And there are some hidden surprises too. As you drive down the Route du sambac from the ancient city of Arles towards Salin de Giraud (where the salt comes from) you will see a small sign on the side of the road alerting you to La Chassagnette.
The view from the road gives you little inkling of the lovely restaurant that lurks behind the house you can see.
You enter a bar area where an entire wall has been decorated with dried leaves that you have to see to believe! The dining room is large and comfortable and the outside dining area has large tables where groups can enjoy the innovative food.
Behind the outside terrace extends the huge organic vegetable garden where the ingredients for the day's meal are plucked at the last moment to ensure freshness.
The meal starts with tapas-style dishes. Some are based on vegetables, however you might be served grilled sardines as well. Whatever you are served on the day will be interesting and innovative and will make the journey worth while.
