Mud Bar and Restaurant is a busy restaurant in the Seaport complex overlooking the muddy waters of the North Esk river close to where it joins the equally muddy Tamar River in the northern city of Launceston. The service is excellent, the vibe is informal and the food is good. Many dishes have an Asian influence.
A dish of squid with an Asian-style salad was very good although it veered to the sweet side of the scale for our savoury leanings. Three very nice koftas were the basis of the other entrée.
The best dish of the night was braised lamb with polenta. The lamb was falling-apart tender but still very moist. It had loads of flavour and this was nicely offset by the soft polenta.
A crème brulee to finish was expertly prepared.
We accompanied these dishes with a Sinapius Chardonnay which is a wine that fits our philosophy of minimal intervention and low yields in the vineyard and wild yeast fermentation and no additions in the winemaking process. The wine had also not been fined to help retain the flavours and express the terroir more closely.
