Bandol wine appellation

Bandol is the name of a town on the French Mediterranean coast about half way between Toulon and Cassis. It gives its name to a local appellation producing red Mourvedre-based wines (at least 50%), aged roses and some white wines. Reds are also permitted to contain Grenache, Syrah, Carignan and Cinsault. The whites are produced from a variety of grapes including Bourboulenc, Clairette and Ugni Blanc. However, it is the dark, brooding Mourvedre with its barnyard aromas that gets people excited about the wines of this appellation.

Perhaps the best known domaine is Domaine Tempier which has long been featured at leading restaurants in the United States such as Chez Panisse in California and Campagne in Seattle.

Other producers of note are Chateau Saint Anne, Château Pradeaux, Château de Pibarnon, Domaine de La Bastide Blanche, Domaine La Suffrene and Domaines Ott.
