Bistro Camille is to be found in front of a long-running motel in the city of Devonport in Tasmania. We were inspired to eat here by reports that there was some serious French food being turned out by the chef here.
We went along to try it and were certainly not disappointed. The food is very French and based on some very good ingredients. A terrine that we tried was as good as many we have had in France with the liver to fat ratio being spot on.
The other aspect that was pleasing was the very efficient and generally knowledgeable service.
In thinking of places we have eaten which serve a similar style of food we came up with the classic French bistro food of France Soir in Melbourne, Le Pichet in Seattle, Balthazar in New York or Le Comptoir in Paris.
The dishes we ate were from the honour role of classics such as the pork terrine with lots of fat taken from the throat of the pig. A dish of steak with frites, a tarte tartin and a crème bruleé were all cooked with skill and understanding.
This type of cooking, based around produce that grows well in a temperate climate, is so well suited to North-West Tasmania.
Here’s hoping this restaurant gets plenty of support - real food and very good service too.
