Templo is a tiny restaurant and bar in Patrick Street just near Harrington St. The food here has an Italian influence. The menu is mercifully brief and you can either choose from the list chalked on the wall or just ask the chef to feed you. They have a short wine list with some interesting options (we supply a couple of them) and they also have an enlightened BYO policy. You can bring bottles of wine for a flat $15 per bottle charge.
The restaurant has been full of locals since the day it opened with many returning again and again to fill the 22 seats, all of which have a view of the kitchen.
While chef Matt Breen turns out the delicious food his business partner Chris Chapple orchestrates the front of house with aplomb.
Breen's food has an Italian bias, reflecting his time working at Hobart's Smolt and, before Templo opened, a few months at Melbourne's Tipo 00. You might be served freshly-made gnocchetti with broccolini and chilli, or beef carpaccio with radicchio and anchovy cream and then finish with lemon semifreddo after knocking over a veal cotoletta. These choices are all listed on the blackboard.
At recent meals we have enjoyed a beautiful lamb dish which was accompanied by fresh broad beans and strong broad bean leaves. A thoroughly delicious dish! Another was a dish of rhubarb, pannacotta and frangipane where each of the ingredients added to the other to create an harmonious whole.
