Three Japanese has now moved to new premises in the heart of Battery Point where they eill continue to serve their trademark izakaya-style food along with an interesting selection of sake and wine - some of which is natural. The service at this restaurant is charming and the food irresistible.
Three Japanese is run by Yuya and Yasuko Hayashi with Yasuko looking after the front of house and the wine program and Yuya manning the stoves.
We love the grilled dishes such as the chicken skin on skewers and the chicken hearts and gizards (also chargrilled and served on skewers). But all dishes are very tasty. We have loved the rice ball which we have had every time from our first visit and the little snacks served to each of us at the start of the meal.
But the most amazing dish is the chawan mushi. This savoury custard is one of the most interesting in the Japanese culinary repertoire. At Three Japanese the custard is topped with a layer of stock and maybe a few small pieces of sea urchin roe (on our most recent visit). The texture of the custard was perfect and the savoury broth exemplary.
We have also thoroughly enjoyed a number of tofu dishes here including the comforting and nourishing Agedashi Tofu and an amazing "tofu" dish made from sesame which is light, refreshing and very satisfying.
We always enjoy our visits here whether it is for a quick lunch or a lingering meal.
