Oscar W's is within the historic Echuca port region built beside the amazing red gum wharf that overlooks the Murray river. Cleverly designed so that every table can share the view (which helps you cope with missing out on a window table), it is light and airy, with enough wood and corrugated iron to give you a sense of the Murray without veering towards kitch. The night we ate it was packed and it was day one of a new menu. It was proving a little difficult to manage, with all sorts of delays and frustrated customers, although the floor staff did their best to make amends. Meanwhile, we drank more than we intended - Lustau Manzanilla sherries, Lashmar viognier by the glass and a bottle of 2000 Crozes-Hermitage ‘Les Meysonniers' by Chapoutier. We ate a selection of small dishes to start with - lamb kofti, that was a little dry and overcooked for us, arancini, and a piece of frittata. At $6.0 each, these were good value. Then we had braised beef cheeks and Murray cod, which didn't quite live up to its promised crispness. They were certainly generous serves though, which meant we were unable to sample the excellent range of cheeses or try desserts. Given the wonderful wine selection, which includes a good list of sherries and wines by the glass, and the great venue, Oscar W's is good enough to make you choose Echuca rather than some alternative town if you're travelling in this region. (There's also the excellent Black Pudding Delicatessen where you can have breakfast the next day.) There's plenty to do and see in and around Echuca so consider staying long enough so that you can enjoy Oscar's for lunch. That way you'll appreciate the Murray views all the more. We haven't tried lunch but the menu includes sandwiches and other lighter dishes.
