Salamanca Fruit Market is one of Hobart's largest and busiest greengrocers. Much space is given over to Tasmanian produce, especially apples, pears and potatoes. You can rest assured that if a variety is available, it should be here. The potatoes, which are at the back of the shop, are for the most part sold unwashed so, provided you keep them out of the light, they should keep well. You might find Pink-eyes, Kennebecs, Bintjes, Up-to-Dates, Russet Burbanks, or Bismarks. They also stock good Tasmanian parsnips, pumpkins, swedes and beetroots, those great root vegetables that our restaurants unfortunately tend to shy away from. In season, one whole row is usually devoted to raspberries and strawberries, and you'll also find reasonable tomatoes even in the off-season. They usually have Romas and, provided you buy them well in advance and give them time to ripen, they are good to cook with. Salamanca Fruit Market has a good range of fresh herbs, always has the ubiquitous Houston's salad greens, and is also a good place to go if you're looking for limes and other fruits from interstate. In season, they stock figs and quinces. As well as the greengrocer, there are several shelves of regular grocery lines and there's also a dairy section selling cheeses, milk, and butter. For those who are besotted by Greek food you can find sour trehana here.
