The Healey Pyengana Cheese Factory is a must-visit venue in the state's beautiful North East region. The drive from Launceston to Pyengana is full of little surprises such as the view from the lookout at the top of the Sidling just before you get to Scottsdale. There are other interesting things to see along the way such as the remnants of the tin mining at Derby and the rich history of Chinese involvement in the mining industry in this area.
Pyengana and Ringarooma are thriving dairying areas with a tradition for making great cheddar. Jon Healey, a third-generation cheese-maker, makes Pyengana cloth matured cheddar.
You can buy it direct if you are passing through Pyengana (look for the turn-off to the factory, which is on the road to St Columbia Falls) and, at the same time, watch the cheese being made. For milk lovers, treat yourself to a milkshake straight from the farm. They also sell the milk widely in the North East. You can also buy the cheese at the Wursthaus Kitchen in Hobart, Bryer Café in Launceston and other good delicatessens. They also produce a very good fresh, full-cream milk under the label Real Milk which is distributed throughout Tasmania.
The Holy Cow café at the factory is also a great place to stop for a coffee or a milk shake before heading to Launceston through the beautiful Myrtle Forest or to St Helens in the other direction.
