The main square of the old Roman town of Vaison-la-Romaine is a strange mixture of tourist cafes and boutique stores. But there can be no doubt about the quality of the goods on offer at Le Pain des Moissons from the moment you enter this venerable establishment.
Their breads are excellent and made using organic ingredients. Breads are also made from spelt flour and kumut flour as well as rye and the corn-rye mix that the French call Meteil.
All loaves are fashioned by hand and allowed to rise slowly to fully develop flavours and texture. Each bread type is identified with a small 'blackboard' describing the ingredients. There is also a handy summary in the window that allows you to peruse the offerings and prices before you enter the shop.
We like the Pain Integral and the Petit Epeautre de Provence made from 100% spelt grain. There are also a number of specialty breads made here including pain au fruits sec and olive fougasse.
