If you like honest Greek food then it is probably worth catching the train to the otherwise unremarkable Portuguese enclave at Petersham. While nearby Marrickville is better known for its Greek establishments most of the restaurants here are Portuguese. However, nestled among them is the tiny Perama - where you can get good Greek food and very attentive service.
There are two dishes from a recent meal that are 'worth a journey'. The first was spinach pie that was presented as a small disc of phyllo about 3 cms high. The crisp pastry was a nice foil to the well cooked and seasoned spinach. This came on a mezze platter that also included spiced figs, marinated artichokes and marinated eggplant. Another platter contained the traditional dips that went nicely with the good bread but didn't rise to sublime heights.
Entrees consisted of dishes such as beautifully grilled octopus accompanied by an overly refined tomato-based sauce, deep fried whitebait with a pleasant ouzo and yoghurt sauce and sausages made from chicken and haloumi cheese.
The other dish of the night was lamb that had been cooked for a long, long time and then grilled prior to being served. This literally melted in the mouth and had a deep, rich and satisfying flavour.
And the desserts were innovative and interesting. An ice cream made from olive oil, figs and pistachios was rich but flavourful and was cut nicely by an accompanying red wine granita. There was also a very good baclava ice cream, as was the rice pudding and strawberries.
There is a very limited list of Greek wines available, however don't discount them. There have always been some excellent Greek wines available and they are relatively affordable. In recent years there has been a real revival with huge amounts of money being invested in plant and equipment to ensure that the highest standards are achieved. Look for wines from the gigantic Boutari and Sons (they have a reasonable Boutari from Naoussa on the wine list).
So, our advice is to order the more traditional dishes here - there are many dishes that experiment with new ideas (apricots stuffed with smoked trout and crab meat) that sometimes work and sometimes don't. However the traditional dishes are sensational.
